In the Division 2 138-lb weight class in the WIAA state championship match, New London’s undefeated senior William Christopher came into Madison as the third seed in his bracket, while boasting a 57-0 record during the season.
Christopher ran roughshod over his opponents in the first three matches of the tournament, winning two by pinfall and the other by technical fall, defeating his opponent 18-1.
In the first-place match, Christopher found himself taking on East Troy’s Landen Bogard, who was a fifth seed in the 138-lb bracket.
Christopher got the scoring going at 1:11 in period two with a reversal, but Bogard answered with an escape at 0:28 to put pressure on Christopher.
A timely response came as the clock ran out in the period when Christopher delivered a takedown on Bogard that gave him momentum going into period three.
Bogard would score on an escape at 1:54 in period three, and once again, Christopher was on the attack with a takedown.
In the final minute, it was another escape by Bogard with a takedown by Christopher at the 0:24 mark to secure a 11-3 vict undefeated season and a state championship.
